Pope's Prayer Intentions

July 2008

The Pope's general prayer intention for July is: "That there may be an increase in the number of those who, as volunteers, offer their services to the Christian community with generous and prompt availability."

His missionary intention is: "That the World Youth Day held in Sydney, Australia, may awaken the fire of divine love in young people and make them sowers of hope for a new humanity."

Planned Church Improvements--We Need Your Help!!

UPDATE!

7/19: Fabric covering for our kneelers has arrived!  Please stay tuned for padding arrival and organizing the work crew.

Beginning the end of July, St. Veronica Church will begin a number of improvements in an effort to beautify our Church. We’ve opened a MySignUp page at http://www.mysignup.com/cgi-bin/view.cgi?datafile=kofc12579 which details how many volunteers are needed and when. As there will be changes on a nearly daily basis, please check back both here and at the MySignUp page often!

  1. New portable chairs.  St John the Evangelist in Warrenton has made 375 wood chairs (with fabric seats & back and a place for hymnals beneath the seat) available to us in exchange for the 225 chairs currently have in our church. The new chairs will provide more seating as well as storage for the hymnals/prayer books. We will remove our chairs after the 5 PM mass on Sunday, July 27th.  Chair exchange will occur on Monday, July 28.  Our schedule calls for us to clean-up (as necessary) these wood chairs and install them in church for the August 2/3 weekend.
  2. Kneelers. Our current kneelers desperately need recovering. New fabric has been ordered and additional padding will be purchased. Delivery should be later this month. We will begin to recover the kneelers in August.
  3. Hymnal holders. Our new hymnals are already being damaged where they lie on the floor or in the pews.  These additional hymnal holders have been ordered so we can protect our new hymnals.  We will begin the installation of these holders in August concurrent with the kneeler effort.
  4. Prayer cards. The Knights of Columbus have donated laminated prayer cards that contain prayers we currently pray at the Masses celebrated at St. Veronica. The prayer cards also include many traditional Catholic prayers we would encourage all to learn.

Pray the rosary for warriors

Pray the rosary for warriors using the sorrowful mysteries:

  1. Agony in the garden: for deployed soldiers and their safety
  2. Scourging at the pillar: for wounded soldiers and for their healing
  3. Crowning with thorns: for deceased soldiers and repose of their souls
  4. Carrying of the cross: for families of deployed, wounded and deceased soldiers, and for strength and comfort.
  5. Crucifixion: for our nation, for the victims of war and for peace in the world.

The full article on the Warrior Rosary can be found at the Arlington Catholic Herald.

Knights of Columbus sets record for charitable giving, volunteer service

New Haven, CT - June 6, 2008 - The Knights of Columbus announced today that it set new all-time records for charitable giving and volunteer service hours in 2007. Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson released the results of the survey in a speech to state deputies and members of the board of directors in New Haven.

The results of the Order's Annual Survey of Fraternal Activity for the year ending December 31, 2007 show that total contributions to charity at all levels reached $144,911,781 - exceeding the previous year's total by more $1 million. The figure includes $31,235,220 donated by the Supreme Council, and $113,676,561 in charitable donations from state and local councils, Fourth Degree assemblies, and squire circles.

The survey also shows that the reported number of volunteer hours by Knights for charitable causes grew to 68,695,768 hours, up more than 400,000 hours from 2005. There were 393,030 Knights of Columbus blood donors during the year, and Knights made more than 5.5 million visits to the sick and bereaved.

Cumulative figures show that during the past decade, the Knights of Columbus has donated nearly $1.28 billion to charity, and provided in excess of 612 million hours of volunteer service in support of charitable causes.

The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest lay Catholic organization, with more than 1.75 million members in the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Central America, and Poland.
